In this lesson you will learn a footwork shine called the “Double-Kick Grapevine Flairs.” This step goes really well with a rhythm in Salsa called the Tumbao, which is played by the congas. The strong accents of the Tumabo are on beats 8 & 1, 2, 4 & 5, and 6. When you execute this step, you will feel as if you are playing the congas with your feet !

A word about Salsa Dance Styles

L.A. style (On1) and New York style (On2) are two of the most popular Salsa dance styles around the world. In the L.A style, the leader breaks forward with his left foot on the first beat of the measure while the follower breaks back with her right foot. In the New York style, the follower breaks forward with her left foot on the second beat of the measure while the leader breaks back with his right foot.

Once you feel comfortable dancing on one of these styles, you can easily translate your Salsa repertoire to the other style by following the “Timing Conversion Table” included as supplemental material with this video.

Salsa Shines – Suzy Q variations

The Suzy Q is a well known step in salsa. It’s very easy to create variations of that step to add some new shines to your bag of tricks. This clip shows a number of variations, but many more can be made, using the principle of starting with the first half of the Suzy Q, doing something inbetween, and ending with the last half of the Suzy Q.
